Favorite Metro Detroit Spots Right Now

There’s a lot happening in the U.S. right now, and it can feel overwhelming at times. As the weather starts to improve and the sun finally returns, it’s a good reminder that our mental health matters too. Getting outside, spending time with people, and enjoying the spaces around us can help bring a little balance back. Over time, I’ve found a handful of places around Metro Detroit that I return to again and again.

Cafés & Coffee

The Congregation – 9321 Rosa Parks Blvd, Detroit, Michigan, 48206

The Congregation is one of the most unique cafés in Detroit, located inside a beautifully restored historic church. The soaring ceilings, stained glass, and natural light create an atmosphere that feels calm and reflective. It’s the kind of place where you can linger over coffee, write, catch early morning donation-based yoga, or meet a friend without feeling rushed.

Cannelle by Matt Knio – 45 W Grand River Ave, Detroit, MI 48226

Canelle is one of the best pastry (& coffee) shops in Metro Detroit, offering beautifully crafted French desserts and baked goods. My personal favorites are the fraisier, a delicate strawberry cake layered with cream, and the ham and cheese baguette, which is simple, but incredibly satisfying. Tip: ask them to warm your sandwich and try the pistachio latte with a shot of espresso. It’s a bit on the pricer side as far as pastry shops go, but it’s all top tear and you get what you pay for.

Awake Café 4224 3rd Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

Awake Café has a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes it perfect for slow mornings or quiet afternoons. It’s a great place to bring a notebook/laptop, meet someone for coffee, or simply pause for a moment during a busy day. The space feels relaxed and community-centered. Their breakfast sandwiches (on a bagel) are really tasty too.

Café Sous Terre – 445 W Forest Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

Café Sous Terre feels like a hidden gem tucked beneath the city. Located underground, it has a warm, intimate atmosphere that makes it ideal for long conversations or quiet coffee breaks. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon once and keep coming back to. Keep a lookout for their Vinyl Wednesday events. You’ll be hooked.

Restaurants & Food Spots

Grey Ghost –  47 Watson St, Detroit, MI 48201

Grey Ghost is one of Midtown’s standout restaurants, known for its exceptional cocktails and refined, but approachable menu. The space feels polished without being overly formal, making it great for both celebrations and casual nights out.
It’s consistently one of the most memorable dining experiences in the city.

Flyleaf – 92 Kercheval Ave, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236

Flyleaf is a beautifully designed restaurant inside the historic Alger House in Grosse Pointe Park. The atmosphere feels elegant, but relaxed. The bistro menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and creative American dishes, paired with a thoughtful cocktail and brunch program. Read/buy a book, get some work done, but note, they do have laptop policies.

Mink – 1701 Trumbull Ave, Suite D, Detroit, MI 48216

Mink is a small seafood restaurant that focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients. The menu changes frequently depending on what seafood is available, which makes each visit feel unique. The intimate setting makes the dining experience feel personal and thoughtfully curated. It’s a perfect spot for a first date or intimate anniversary or birthday dinner. You’ll feel like royalty.

Midnight Temple2466 Riopelle St, Detroit, MI 48207

Midnight Temple offers a stylish dining experience with a moody, atmospheric interior. The menu is creative and modern, and the overall vibe feels perfect for late dinners or special nights out. It’s one of those restaurants where the ambiance is just as memorable as the food. Truly, this place will not disappoint. Note: T-F – it doesn’t open until after 5pm ET.

Frank’s Deli (Eastern Market) 3401-3445 Russell St, Detroit, MI 48207

Frank’s Deli is a longtime Eastern Market staple known for hearty sandwiches and classic deli fare. I lived a stone’s throw away from this deli for a few years and didn’t frequent this place enough. It’s especially lively on Saturday mornings when the market is buzzing with activity. Stopping here for breakfast or lunch has become a tradition for many Detroiters and for good reason. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but folks tend to obsess over their corned beef sandwiches.

Book Tower & Its Restaurants

Book Tower is one of the most beautiful architectural restorations in downtown Detroit. Originally built in the 1920s, the building has been revitalized into a vibrant space filled with restaurants, gathering areas, and stunning historic details.

Le Suprême – 1265 Washington Blvd Suite #200, Detroit, MI 48226

Le Suprême is an elegant French brasserie located inside Book Tower. The menu features classic French dishes in a lively, sophisticated atmosphere. If you’re hosting friends or family visiting Detroit for the first time, add it to your itinerary. Just do it.

Kamper’s Rooftop Lounge – 1265 Washington Blvd Suite #200, Detroit, MI 48226

Kamper’s offers rooftop cocktails and incredible views of the Detroit skyline. It’s a great place for sunset drinks or a relaxed evening above the city. There was another location that I had in my back pocket if I wanted similar features, but Kamper’s shines in its professionalism, quality, and atmosphere. Those things matter a great deal~

Bar Rotunda – 1265 Washington Blvd Suite #200, Detroit, MI 48226

Bar Rotunda sits in the building’s breathtaking historic rotunda. The café and bar space is visually stunning and perfect for coffee or cocktails in a truly unique setting. If you’re just getting to know someone, this place is wonderful to grab a quick drink. You’ll have plenty to talk about and it’s close to several in-building restaurants if it goes well.

Hiroki-San – 1265 Washington Blvd, Detroit, MI 48226

Hiroki-San is one of the most beautiful restaurants inside Book Tower and a great spot if you’re craving sushi and sake downtown. The space feels sleek and modern, but still calm and comfortable, which makes it perfect for a relaxed bite. The sushi is fresh and thoughtfully prepared, and it’s the kind of place where everything, from the presentation to the atmosphere, feels incredibly intentional.

Sakazuki – 1265 Washington Blvd Suite #200, Detroit, MI 48226

Sakazuki has more of a lively izakaya vibe, which makes it a fun place to go with friends. The menu focuses on Japanese small plates and sushi dogs that are easy to share, so it’s great if you want to try a few different things. It’s the kind of place where small bites can easily turn into drinks and a long conversation without anyone feeling rushed.

Arts & Culture

Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) – 5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202

The Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the most impressive museums in the country. Its collection spans centuries of art and includes the iconic Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera. It’s a place that always leaves you feeling inspired and whenever I need a break from life and the world, I aimlessly roam this museum for hours. No entry fee for Detroit Residents (ID proof).

MOCAD – 55 E Canfield St, Detroit, MI 48201

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit focuses on bold, experimental exhibitions that reflect modern culture and ideas. Rotating shows ensure every visit feels different. It’s a great place to see art that pushes boundaries and to meet new people.

Detroit Public Library (Main Branch) – 5201 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48202

The main branch of the Detroit Public Library is one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. The historic architecture, murals, and quiet reading rooms create an atmosphere that feels peaceful and intellectual. It’s an underrated cultural gem in Detroit.
It’s a top-tier location for photo shoots as well. As long as you notify the building in advance and keep it cute, you’re golden.

Markets & Specialty Shopping

Eastern Market – 2934 Russell St, Detroit, MI 48207

Eastern Market is one of the oldest and largest public markets in the United States. Farmers, artists, and food vendors fill the market every weekend, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. Saturdays are especially lively and the best time to go.

H-Mart (Troy) – 2963 E Big Beaver Rd, Troy, MI 48083

H-Mart in Troy is a massive Asian grocery store filled with specialty ingredients, fresh produce, and prepared foods. It’s one of the best places in the area to explore new flavors and cuisines. Frankly, if I want fresh fruits and veggies, I go here.

Kim Nhung Superfood – 29411 John R Rd, Madison Heights, MI 48071

Kim Nhung Superfood is one of my favorite Asian grocery stores in Metro Detroit. The store carries a wide range of ingredients from across Asia, including fresh produce, sauces, spices, and snacks you won’t find in typical supermarkets.
It’s a great place to explore if you enjoy cooking Asian dishes or discovering new ingredients, including skincare.

Outdoor & Scenic Detroit

Detroit Riverwalk – 1340 Atwater St, Detroit, MI 48207

The Detroit Riverwalk stretches along the waterfront and offers some of the most beautiful views in the city. Walking, biking, taking your pup(s) on a stroll, or simply sitting by the river here is always peaceful. It’s one of Detroit’s best outdoor spaces.

Dequindre Cut Greenway – Wilkins St & Orleans St, Detroit, MI 48207

The Dequindre Cut is one of Detroit’s most unique urban greenways, running about two miles between Eastern Market and the Detroit Riverwalk. Throughout the year, the space also hosts community events, pop-up markets, fitness classes, and seasonal gatherings that bring people together outdoors. It’s a great way to experience a different side of the city while connecting two of Detroit’s most popular destinations.

Belle Isle Conservatory – 4 Inselruhe Ave, Detroit, MI 48207

The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory on Belle Isle feels like stepping into a tropical garden. The historic glass structure houses palm trees, exotic plants, and seasonal flowers. It’s a peaceful escape from the city and an excellent dopamine boost.

Cranbrook House & Gardens – 380 Lone Pine Rd, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304

Cranbrook House & Gardens is one of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in Metro Detroit. The historic estate is surrounded by thoughtfully designed gardens, fountains, and quiet walking paths that make it easy to spend an afternoon exploring. It’s a peaceful place to slow down, take photos, or simply enjoy being outside.

The Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit’s Rivertown district brings Michigan’s outdoor experiences into an interactive indoor space. It’s a fun and educational stop that’s great for both adults and kids, especially if you love Michigan’s natural landscapes.

Ford-Wyoming Drive-In Theatre – 10400 Ford Rd, Dearborn, MI 48126

Watching a movie at the Ford-Wyoming Drive-In feels wonderfully nostalgic. You can enjoy films from the comfort of your car under the open sky. It’s a classic Detroit experience that still feels special. Just be mindful that it’s. better for a larger group to all go in one car ($30/car). Other than that I recommend loading up on food and snacks in advance and going for the double features to make it extra worthwhile.

Dyno Detroit Climbing – 3500 Orleans St, Detroit, MI 48207

Dyno Detroit is an indoor climbing gym that combines fitness, challenge, and community. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced climber, the environment is welcoming and energetic. It’s a fun way to meet fellow Detroiters and stay active in the city. Wear comfortable clothing and don’t be afraid to get in there and go for it. Everyone starts somewhere.

Rooftop yoga at the Cambria Hotel offers a peaceful experience with incredible skyline views. Practicing yoga above the city creates a perfect balance of calm and energy. It’s one of the most relaxing ways to spend time downtown. They also offer rooftop pilates classes. Keep up with their schedule on the Cambria Hotel website.

Wellness

Breckles Massage Therapy – 16610 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Park, MI 48230

Breckles Massage Therapy is a place to truly reset and recharge. The environment is calm, professional, and restorative, making it easy to disconnect from the pace of daily life. Whether you’re dealing with tension or simply want a moment of self-care, it’s a great place to relax and reset.

IMMERSE Spa (MGM Grand) – 1777 3rd Ave, Detroit, MI 48226

The spa at MGM Grand Detroit feels like a luxurious escape right in the middle of the city. The facility includes steam rooms, whirlpools, relaxation lounges, and a full menu of treatments, including massages and facials. It’s one of my favorite places in Detroit to spend a few hours unwinding and fully decompressing. My older sis put me onto this place and I’m obsessed.

Metaphysica Wellness Center offers a more spiritual and holistic approach to wellness. The space focuses on healing practices like sound baths, meditation, energy work, and other restorative experiences. It’s a beautiful place to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself in a deeper way. Bonus: it’s right next door to Mink (restaurant).

Final Thoughts

Cities reveal themselves through the places we return to. Over time, certain cafés, parks, museums, and restaurants start to feel like small anchors in the rhythm of everyday life, and these are some of the ones that have become that for me in Metro Detroit.

And if you love wandering through bookstores as much as I do, stay tuned. In the coming weeks, I will be sharing a guide to some of my favorite bookstores in the Metro Detroit area.
