Where to Sell Your Stuff Online (and the Travel Essentials Worth Buying Before You Go)

If you’re planning a move abroad or even just downsizing before a big trip, one of the first hurdles is figuring out what to do with all your “stuff.” From furniture to small personal items, selling online can help you lighten the load and add extra cash to your travel fund. At the same time, you’ll want to invest in a few key products that make moving and traveling much smoother.

Here’s a practical guide to the best places to sell your belongings and a few must-have products you can grab through Amazon.

Best Platforms to Sell Personal Items & Furniture Online

1. Facebook Marketplace

Fast, free, and local. Perfect for selling furniture, décor, and everyday items. You can reach buyers in your area without listing fees, and buyers often pick items up right at your door. I sell something on FB Marketplace about every other week. In fact, yesterday, I sold a pair of heels I wore to a friend’s wedding and immediately transferred it to a high yield savings account.

2. OfferUp

A mobile-friendly app for local sales. Great for furniture, electronics, and small appliances. It includes shipping options if you’re willing to send items out. This site is often overlooked, but if certain items aren’t selling on other platforms, it’s a great place to post them as a backup resource.

3. Craigslist

Old school but still effective for big items like couches, bed frames, and tables. Just be cautious with safety (meet in public places or bring someone with you). When I lived in D.C., I found most of my furniture on craigslist and when I moved back to the Detroit Metro Area, I sold it all again using the same site.

4. eBay

Best for collectibles, electronics, or name-brand items. eBay gives you access to a global market, but remember to factor in shipping costs. It’s a great place to sell collectables such as action figures (yes, they ebb and flow through my collection), sports cards, stamps, coins, or any old gaming systems, etc.

5. Poshmark or Mercari

If you’re clearing out clothing, accessories, or smaller home goods, these apps are easy to use and have built-in buyer protections. Poshmark is a game-changer. I revamped my wardrobe a few months back before moving to my current place and made quite the bag in 3 weeks.

6. AptDeco

If you own high-quality or designer furniture, this platform specializes in resale and can fetch better prices than local marketplaces.

Smart Moving & Travel Products

Once you’ve sold off the big stuff, you’ll want to invest in gear that makes moving and traveling easier:

1. Packing Cubes

Keep your clothes organized by category (workout gear, casual outfits, formal wear). They make packing and unpacking way less stressful.

2. Space-Saver Vacuum Bags

Ideal if you’re storing winter coats, throw blankets, or trying to fit more into your luggage overall.

3. Luggage Scale

Avoid overweight baggage fees: weigh your bags before heading to the airport.

4. Universal Travel Adapter

Instead of buying new adapters for every country, get one universal adapter with multiple USB ports. I have two of these and I throw them in my bag before traveling internationally.

5. Portable Power Bank

Long flights and travel days mean dead phones. It’s also not recommended to plug any of your devices into any airport USB port right now. Hacking is at an all time high. A high-capacity power bank is a lifesaver. I have 4 of these and store them in this case.

6. Collapsible Water Bottle

Eco-friendly, space-saving, and TSA-friendly when empty. No more chugging down water or completely tossing it before maneuvering through security at the airport.

7. TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

Extra peace of mind when you’re traveling through airports or staying in shared spaces. Bonus: instead of writing your home address on a luggage tag, which I can’t believe many of us still do in this day and age, use a QR code luggage tag instead. In fact, if someone scans it to try to get your info, you’ll be alerted and the location of your luggage shared.

8. Comfortable Travel Backpack

Look for one with anti-theft features, a laptop compartment, and enough room for a day’s worth of essentials. This is the exact backpack that I’ve had for the past 5 years and I’m obsessed with it. It’s gone on so many business and international trips with me. It’s so good that I’ve had friends and family ask me about it and buy it themselves.

Final Thoughts

Selling your belongings before a big move isn’t just about decluttering. You’re creating breathing room and fueling your next chapter. With the right platforms, you can offload furniture and personal items quickly, and with a few smart travel products, you’ll be ready to move lighter, smarter, and stress-free. At the end of the day, it’s less about what you’re leaving behind and more about the freedom you’re creating for what’s ahead. So sell what you don’t need, pack with intention, and step into your new beginning with confidence~
